Ella Steele and David Lafleur began collaboration online in fall 2021. From there, the ongoing creative research and choreographic phases have taken place in both Winnipeg, MB and Gatineau, QC. This work is fully collaborative with each dancers ideas and visions amalgamating to become a cohesive voice.
Musical director, composer, and bassist Leighton Harrell has created three original jazz music compositions for this work inspired by each concept through his point of view. Each composition was created with the unique voice of tap dance in mind as well as the dynamic ways that both forms interact.
The accompanying projection created by artist Leigh Lugosi follows the progression of Mirror/Water/Doorway and allows for deeper connection to the work through imagery while leaving room for individual interpretation.
A fifteen minute iteration of Mirror/Water/Doorway was debuted as a commission presented by the Toronto International Tap Dance Festival (in partnership with Harbourfront Theatre Centre, presented by Toffan Rhythm Projects)
Ella Steele and David Lafleur were joined on stage by fellow tap dancers Veronica Simpson and Laura Donaldson. Leighton Harrell on bass was joined by pianist Steven Noronha and drummer Aidian McConnell.
